Chapter 17

No matter how many times Kong tried to reassure me, I still felt like I was crossing a line. I would remember this day many years from now as the watershed moment, the point of no return: the day my sanity left for good.

“How do I look?” he asked me, sitting in front of the mirror, using his paw to comb his fur in the wrong direction.

“Cute,” I said.

“Humbug,” he said. “I’m being serious.”

“So am I,” I said. “You can always use the Jibbleson sisters’ Presto-Chango-Disguise-o-Tron 14.”

“I don’t need any disguise,” Kong said. “I need a specific one.”

“Honestly, you’re too well-fed for this,” I said. “Even if you get the look down, you’re too rotund.”

“I have to go. I have to find the truth,” he said.

He must have finally gotten his fur the way he wanted, because he stepped away from the mirror and said it was time to go.

“I’m not sure why I’m even coming,” I asked. “Aren’t cats supposed to be independent?”

“I told you twenty times,” Kong said. “When I say the codeword, you have to run up and say, ‘Oh there you are, little Meowzers!’ and sweep me away. I don’t want to actually buy any of that stuff.”

This was all part of Kong’s master plan to infiltrate the catnip dealer’s empire.

He was going undercover.

“Come on,” he said. I quickly checked myself out in the mirror before grabbing my keys. My hair was neat, no fruit stains on my clothing, a nice amethyst amulet around my neck to really bring out the highlights in my eyes. The amulet was getting heavier, fecund with the voidmagic power inside. Hortensia had said that it needed to be let out, like a pressure valve. She was right. When I finally found The Life and Times of Archmagus Antonius Antonello, I would open a portal and toss the book through it. That ought to be a big enough release.

We walked into town, taking advantage of the rare morning cloud cover. “Remember your lines?” Kong asked me.

“Yes,” I said.

“Your attitude could use a little work,” Kong said.

“It’s just that I’m busy,” I said.

“Too busy to help countless cats in town before they fall victim to addiction?” Kong said. “And this is no different from your various murder investigation capers with Rend and Lizzie and Whitney.”

He got me there.

Before we got to the alleyway, we parted company. “They can’t see me with my owner,” Kong said. “They’ll think I’m square.”

“Ha!” I said. “You just called me your owner! You admit it!”

“I was merely using your terminology for ease of communication. If I translated the cat word for it, you wouldn’t understand. Your vocal cords aren’t taut enough.”

“Yeah, it must be hard for cats to talk to their owners,” I said. “But don’t worry, the other cats won’t see you with your owner. I’ll stay away so they won’t know I’m your owner.”

“Your sense of humor is so highly developed and sophisticated, I can hardly stand it,” Kong said. He trotted off toward the alleyway.
